EPS vs. The Rebels: Internal Revolt and 'Resort Politics' Push AIADMK Toward a Formal Fracture

AIADMK at the Crossroads: The Great 2026 Split as Rebel Faction Backs TVK Government

AIADMk is in crisis, indeed its navigating through a crucial situation. the party has intensively split into two distinct factions over the issue of supporting the new government led by C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK. A major internal rebellion concluded today, Tuesday, May 12, with two distinct groups emerging within the legislature. The Rebel Faction, Pro-TVK, led by senior significant leaders like Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani, this group has formally declared its support for the TVK government. They have suspect Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) of covertly attempting to form an alliance with the DMK, the party's age-old rival, to secure a leadership role.

The EPS Faction, Neutral and Independent, EPS and his loyalists maintain that the party should remain an independent opposition force. They officially ruled out support for the TVK on May 6, disagreeing that joining the TVK would surrender the opposition space entirely to the DMK and weaken the AIADMK’s identity, which is true.

Only 17 MLAs have signed a letter backing EPS as the Leader of the Opposition. More than 20 legislators abstained from signing, indicating a lack of confidence in his current leadership. It was obvious during the oath-taking ceremony on May 11; the rift was physically visible as MLAs from the two groups sat in separate clusters inside the House. In a dramatic move, approximately 28 MLAs associated with the Shanmugam-Velumani faction were moved to a private resort in Puducherry earlier this week to consolidate their numbers and prevent poaching by the EPS camp. The crisis was aggravated by the defection of K.A. Sengottaiyan, a nine-time MLA and former AIADMK veteran, who resigned in late 2025 and joined the TVK.   Rahul Gandhi: From 'Bharat Jodo' to Alliance Todo! Tata, Goodbye DMK

Sengottaiyan has been actively in contact with his former colleagues in the AIADMK, encouraging them to support the TVK regime, which has further destabilized EPS's control over the western belt strongholds. Looks like the AIADMK has a fragile future and the days ahead will be tough for the party.
