The conclusion follows a high-stakes meeting of the three-member selection committee on May 12, 2026, which was marked by a sharp confrontation between the government and the opposition.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi officially recorded his dissent during the proceedings, which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. Gandhi’s objections were on three primary points.

 He assumed that he was denied access to crucial documents, including the 360-degree appraisal reports of the 69 eligible candidates, until the actual meeting.  Gandhi accused the government of reducing the statutory committee to a mere formality to ensure the selection of a pre-decided candidate. In a public statement, he asserted that the Leader of Opposition is not a rubber stamp and refused to participate in what he termed a biased exercise.

The extension comes at a time when the CBI is handling several high-profile and politically sensitive cases. While the government upholds the extension is necessary for continuity and stability, the opposition argues it weakens the independence of the agency. This is the second extension for Praveen Sood as a Director of CBI. He is involved in most of the latest cases and he cannot go away as there are lots to be done in WB.
