The clash between Tehran and Abu Dhabi in New Delhi erupted during the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Thursday, May 14, 2026. The exchange tinted deep divisions within the expanded bloc on the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi made several and spontaneous accusations against the UAE. Tehran supposed that Abu Dhabi provided its military bases, airspace, and land to U.S. and Israeli forces to help strikes on Iranian territory and Araghchi claimed the UAE provided all kinds of intelligence facilities to the Americans and Israelis during the conflict.
Iranian state media reported Araghchi’s claim that the UAE was an active partner in this aggression and may have acted directly against Iran and Iran criticized the UAE for failing to issue a condemnation when the initial strikes against Iran began.
The pressure was significantly ignited by a report from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on May 13, claiming he had made a secret visit to Abu Dhabi to meet UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan following the launch of joint U.S.-Israeli strikes, which Abu Dhabi officially denied that any such meeting took place.
Araghchi rejected the denial, stating on X that the revelation corroborated what Iranian security services already knew, calling collusion with Israel an unforgivable gamble. From Governance to Grievance: The Dramatic Confrontation at the Calcutta High Court

It can be noted that Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi had restated that Tehran had warned regional neighbours that any assistance to aggressors would make their facilities legitimate targets for Iranian self-defence.
The clash happened against the backdrop of Iran's disruption of the Strait of Hormuz; a move Tehran defended as a response to the aggression supported by regional players.
