Having severe internal dissent, public finger-pointing, and whispers of imminent defections, Banerjee struck a fiercely rebellious tone, daring unhappy leaders to quit while rallying her remaining loyalists to rebuild the organization from scratch.

Addressing the gathered candidates, the huge majority of whom lost their seats, Mamata Banerjee made it clear that she would not spend energy trying to appease unhappy leaders looking for an exit strategy.

"Those who are leaving for other parties, let them go. I will rebuild the party afresh. Trinamool Congress will never bow down. Whoever wants to go may go. I do not believe in forcibly holding anyone back."

This blunt ultimatum was directly aimed at pre-empting a wave of defections to the victorious BJP and silencing the internal rebellion currently rocking the party. The meeting was called against the backdrop of the TMC’s worst electoral disaster since its inception, which pushed the party from absolute power straight to the opposition benches.
