45°C heatwave grips North India. Delhi-NCR scorched, nights offer no relief!

Relentless heatwave till May 24: Stay indoors, hydrate, survive the furnace.

New Delhi: An atrocious prolonged summer heatwave has eclipsed North and Central India. India Meteorological Department has issued extended alerts, as the temperature is expected to go drastically high. As per IMD's latest forecast, the mercury is expected to reach or cross the 45°C mark in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) this week, driven by dry, blistering westerly winds sweeping across the plains. The IMD has created a week-long window of extreme thermal stress across many states. The Core Blast Zone (May 18 – May 24): A relentless heatwave spell is locked over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh. These regions will experience consistently high day temperatures, running between 43C to 45C.

Aberrant heatwave conditions have also expanded into isolated regions of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, indicating severe climate irregularities in usually cooler high-altitude regions. Alongside, parts of Madhya Maharashtra are also facing acute prickle conditions.

Because concrete infrastructures in urban centres like Delhi-NCR absorb enormous heat during the daytime, they continue to radiate that thermal energy long after sunset, and the nights will not get heat-relief. The IMD forecasts warm night conditions where minimum temperatures will refuse to drop significantly below 30C. This deprives the human body of the crucial nocturnal cooling period needed to recover from daytime heat stress, rapidly escalating instances of thermal exhaustion. The prolonged multi-state heatwave is triggering secondary infrastructural emergencies across major cities.

Air conditioning and cooling loads are pushing the northern regional power grids to their absolute brinks, raising the immediate threat of localized transformer failures and rolling blackouts.

With the heatwave enduring until at least May 24, health authorities have raised their response protocols to protect vulnerable demographics, including outdoor labourers, children, and the elderly. The IMD has strictly warned to stay people in-home. Individuals are strictly advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM unless categorically necessary. Increased intake of water, Oral Rehydration Salts, and traditional hydrating fluids like buttermilk or lemon water is highly recommended to counter severe dehydration and heat strokes.

Beating the heat is going to be tough, this summer.
