From a historic 1748 knightly order to a forward-looking Strategic Partnership with Swden

Gothenburg: PM Modi, must be one of the greatest influencers in the globe, and probably his popularity has surpassed every European and US leader, ironically, we do not have significant leaders from Europe or US. Presidents and Prime ministers of US and Europe cannot come some where even close to the pioneer, Modi. He has scripted diplomatic history by becoming the first Asian leader to be conferred with Sweden’s prestigious Royal Order of the Polar Star (Degree Commander Grand Cross). The momentous honour was presented during a special ceremony in Gothenburg on May 17, 2026, by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, in the presence of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. This became, PM Modi’s 31st international honour, highlighting India's expanding footprint in the Nordic region and the formal upgrading of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership. The honour conferred upon PM Modi brings immense historical relevance within European diplomacy.

Instituted originally in 1748 by King Fredrik I, the Royal Order of the Polar Star is one of Sweden’s oldest and most eminent knightly orders. It is particularly intended to recognize individuals for outstanding personal endeavours for Sweden, successful performance of public tasks, or exceptional public service that strengthens international ties with the Scandinavian nation.

The Degree Commander Grand Cross is the absolute highest tier of this order that can be awarded to a foreign Head of Government. PM Modi and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson held extensive talks, officially uplifting India-Sweden relations to a Strategic Partnership focusing heavily on defence, deep-tech manufacturing, telecom, and artificial intelligence.

Speaking to the European Round Table for Industry during his two-day visit, PM Modi emphasized that India’s reform express is moving at hyper-speed, inviting Swedish conglomerates to aggressively invest in India's Green Hydrogen Mission, clean energy grid, and semiconductor supply chains. PM Modi was presented with a historic, highly symbolic gift, a custom box containing faithful archival reproductions of two handwritten cards by legendary Indian poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Incidentally, the gift commemorates the exact 100th anniversary of Tagore’s historic visit to Sweden in 1926, where he was received by King Gustav V after becoming the first non-European Nobel Laureate. The US lets a waiver lapse, and India just shrugs and orders another round of Russian crude

PM Modi dedicated the award to 1.4 billion Indians and the shared values of Europe-India.
