National law vs. Personal law. The standoff between the Assam government and Asaduddin Owaisi

Assam's UCC Bill 2026 sparks a fierce national debate on legal uniformity, minority rights, and modernization.

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi and the Assam state government is having heated argument on tabling of 'The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, 2026 Bill' in the state Assembly. Owaisi criticized the bill, branding it a "backdoor imposition of Hindu law on Muslims" and it systematically targets Muslim personal laws while failing to implement genuine uniformity. Owaisi said, the Bill’s secularization of succession laws directly undermines Islamic jurisprudence on inheritance, he must understand, judicial system is above the religion, and if Muslims feel religion is above law, they should immediately leave the nation. They should have gone when the nation was divided, better late than never. The Razakars should immediately leave the country.

Monogamy is made strictly mandatory for all communities falling under the Bill. Bigamy or polygamy will attract up to seven years of imprisonment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The legal marriage age is standardized at 21 years for men and 18 years for women.

All marriages and divorces must be registered with a Sub-Registrar within 60 days of the ceremony. Non-compliance attracts a fine.

The Bill clarifies that while the legal registration is uniform, couples are entirely free to solemnize their marriages through their traditional religious customs, which includes Nikah, Vedic Bibah, Anand Karaj, or Holy Union. Couples in live-in relationships must register with local authorities within a month of moving in. Children born out of these relationships are legally recognized as fully legitimate, and deserted live-in partners are granted the right to claim financial maintenance through courts. Look who is howling again, Rahowl Gandhi on Muslims again. Can someone bestow upon him an IQ?

While, the nation is heading towards new era and ideas, Owaisi wants to go back to stone-age. The contemporary Islam is actually living in the stone-age. The least Owaisi can do is to allow non-Muslims to prosper, If Owaisi does not want Muslims to be tuned, its Owaisi’s problem, certainly not nation’s problem.
