Kolkata: TMC has expelled two of its MLAs, Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee, for anti-party activities.The expulsions follow a theatrical increase in West Bengal politics over an ongoing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe into a "fake signature" controversy in the Vidhan Sabha. The official expulsion order, signed by TMC vice-president Chandrima Bhattacharya, was issued after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari revealed that the two MLAs had filed formal complaints on the forged signatures. The party mentioned their repeated absence from leadership meetings and actions prejudicial to the interests of AITC as the grounds for their removal.
The issue shoots from a communication submitted by the TMC to the Assembly Secretariat nominating 82-year-old veteran leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition, after the recent assembly elections where the BJP took power.
TMC had initially submitted a nomination letter on May 6, which was rejected on technical grounds. When a second resolution carrying 70 MLA signatures was submitted on May 19, the Assembly Secretariat noted that several signatures did not match official legislative records, instigating the Assembly Secretary to lodge an FIR at Hare Street police station. The case was handed over to the state CID, which has been dispatching handwriting experts and teams to question multiple TMC legislators. The probe rapidly mounted after Canning East MLA Baharul Islam publicly stated he never attended the May 19 meeting and did not sign the document.
