A minor tribal girl from the Dhenkanal district of Odisha was desperately seeking employment to raise money for her mother’s necessary surgery. A local broker, identified as 46-year-old Binay Patra, targeted her financial distress. He lured her with the false promise of a job in Bhubaneswar.

Instead of finding work in Odisha, she was trafficked to Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, where the broker apparently sold her to an individual for ₹1 lakh.

For nearly two years, she was kept in illegal confinement, subjected to severe physical assault, denied food, and repeatedly sexually assaulted. During her captivity, she became pregnant, was forced to undergo an abortion without her consent, and was subsequently sold to a second individual for ₹50,000.

Her captivity ended on May 19, when a local advocate in Uttar Pradesh discovered her situation, provided assistance, and produced her before the Jhansi police. The UP Police subsequently arranged a train ticket for her return to Odisha. A fractured TMC faces its ultimate test as loyalists challenge the rebel brigade

After reaching her home district of Dhenkanal, she narrated her horrific experience and lodged a formal police complaint on May 29. The Dhenkanal police registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The primary broker, Binay Patra, was tracked down and arrested in Visakhapatnam. Odisha police teams have been sent to Jhansi to investigate and apprehend the co-conspirators.

The survivor’s statement has been legally recorded, and she has been placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Dhenkanal. In the Sanatan tradition, Gau Mata doesn't need a government decree to be revered; she is already the self-declared Mother of the Nation

The case has drawn severe repercussion from human rights organizations. The human rights commission has issued urgent notices to the Directors General of Police (DGPs) of both Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, demanding a comprehensive investigation status report and a breakdown of the administrative/rehabilitative steps being taken to support the young survivor.
