Independence Day 2025: 79th, Not 78th! What’s the Truth Behind the Confusion?

India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day in 2025. Learn about the reason behind the confusion with the 78th Independence Day and the history behind it.

Every year, India celebrates its Independence Day on August 15. In 2025, it will be observed as the 79th Independence Day. However, some mistakenly refer to it as the 78th Independence Day.

The confusion arises because India gained independence on August 15, 1947. By 2025, 78 years will have passed since independence. Some people consider these 78 years as the count for Independence Day celebrations. However, the calculation is based on the events held on the day of celebration.

India’s first Independence Day celebration was organized on August 15, 1948. Since then, Independence Day has been celebrated every year on August 15. Thus, counting from 1948 to 2025, it becomes the 79th Independence Day celebration.

In simple terms, the confusion stems from the difference between the day independence was achieved and the first year the Independence Day celebration was officially held. Although independence was attained in 1947, the formal celebration of Independence Day began in 1948. Therefore, in 2025, the nation will celebrate its 79th Independence Day.
