Kannada Shlokas to Replace Sanskrit in Muzrai Temples: Minister Ramalingareddy

Karnataka’s Muzrai Minister Ramalingareddy announced that the state government has decided to prioritize the recitation of shlokas in Kannada instead of Sanskrit during rituals in Muzrai temples. Responding to a request by BJP MLC Bharati Shetty during a question hour session in the Legislative Council, Shetty urged that, similar to Tamil shlokas in Tamil Nadu temples, Karnataka temples should adopt Kannada shlokas.

Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Muzrai Minister Ramalingareddy announced that the state government has decided to prioritize the recitation of shlokas in Kannada instead of Sanskrit during rituals in Muzrai temples. Responding to a request by BJP MLC Bharati Shetty during a question hour session in the Legislative Council, Shetty urged that, similar to Tamil shlokas in Tamil Nadu temples, Karnataka temples should adopt Kannada shlokas. She highlighted that Hiremagalur Kannan is already conducting rituals in Kannada. This initiative will be gradually implemented across the state’s over 35,000 Muzrai temples. The recitation of Kannada shlokas has already begun in some temples in Chamarajanagar district, marking a pioneering effort in the state. However, some critics have argued that this move undermines the traditional value of Sanskrit. The initiative aims to promote the Kannada language while making temple rituals more accessible to devotees in their native language.
