Continuous heavy rainfall in Maharashtra’s Konkan and Western Ghats regions over the past few days has significantly increased water levels in the Krishna River and its tributaries, including Vedaganga, Dudhganga, Ghataprabha, and Malaprabha, in Belagavi district.

Over 1.25 lakh cusecs of water have been released into the Krishna River from Maharashtra’s Rajapur and Koyna reservoirs, with an inflow of over 70,000 cusecs recorded at the Kallol barrage in Chikodi taluk. Bridges such as Karadga-Bhoj, Bhojwadi-Shivpurwadi, Malikwad-Dattwad, Kunnur-Barwad, Jatrat-Bhivashi, Sidnal-Akkol, Yadur-Kallol, and Hunnargi-Mamadapur have been inundated, completely halting transportation in Chikodi and Raibag taluks.read also: GST Slab Changes: Price Reductions for Cars, Mobiles, Computers

Belagavi’s Superintendent of Police, Bhimashankar Guled, stated, “Warnings have been issued to avoid crossing submerged bridges. Despite this, some people are attempting to cross using tractors and two-wheelers, which is dangerous.” The district administration has installed barricades at both ends of the bridges and deployed police round-the-clock. The heavy rainfall has disconnected approximately 15 villages, particularly in Khanapur and Chikodi taluks. The Halatri stream on the Belagavi-Goa highway has been flooded, disrupting road traffic. The district administration has set up temporary relief camps, providing food, medicines, and other essentials to affected residents. Over 10,000 acres of agricultural land in Belagavi’s outskirts have been submerged due to the overflow of the Ballari Nala. Farmers are facing the threat of crop and livestock losses. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the flood-affected areas and instructed authorities to provide immediate relief to victims. District In-Charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi visited the Kudchi bridge and assured continuous coordination with Maharashtra authorities to prevent issues from sudden water releases. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is on standby in the district.) The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall in Belagavi and parts of Maharashtra for the next 48 hours.
