New Delhi: Startling revelations have emerged regarding Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, the accused in the attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) program. The 41-year-old autorickshaw driver from Rajkot, Gujarat, is believed to have carried out a premeditated assault, triggered by anger over a recent Supreme Court order, according to the Delhi Police investigation.The attack occurred on Wednesday morning at the Chief Minister’s camp office in Civil Lines during the Jan Sunwai program. During the incident, Gupta sustained minor injuries to her hand, shoulder, and head. Security personnel promptly apprehended the accused. The Delhi Police have registered a case against him under Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempt to murder, along with other charges.
According to the investigation, Rajesh Khimji has a criminal record with nine cases registered against him at the Bhaktinagar Police Station in Rajkot, including three related to liquor smuggling and two for assault. His mother, Bhanuben Sakariya, told the media that her son is an ardent dog lover and was upset over the Supreme Court’s recent order to relocate stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to shelters. “My son loves dogs immensely. CCTV footage released by the Delhi CM’s office shows that Rajesh conducted reconnaissance around Gupta’s residence in Shalimar Bagh 24 hours before the attack, recording videos around the camp office. The Delhi CM’s office has alleged that the attack was premeditated. “This attack was not just on Rekha Gupta but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve the people of Delhi,” Gupta posted on X.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has labeled the incident a political conspiracy. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa criticized the opposition, stating, “They cannot tolerate Rekha Gupta’s people-centric work.” Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and opposition figure Atishi condemned the attack, saying, “There is room for dissent and protest in democracy, but no place for violence. I hope the Delhi Police will take strict action.”A special team of the Delhi Police, along with the Intelligence Bureau (IB), is interrogating the accused to determine whether he acted alone or if there is a larger conspiracy behind the attack.
