Bengaluru’s roads have long been plagued by potholes, a persistent issue that worsens during the monsoon season, leading to traffic congestion and accidents. To address this, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated a pilot project using Ecofix technology, an innovative and eco-friendly solution for rapid pothole repairs. What is Ecofix Technology?
Developed through a collaboration between the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) and Ramaco Global Services, Ecofix utilizes steel slag a byproduct of the iron and steel industry nas a key component in its specialized pothole-filling mixture. This approach not only repurposes industrial waste but also reduces the environmental impact by minimizing the need for mining natural resources. With India producing approximately 19 million tons of steel slag annually, projected to rise to 60 million tons by 2030, Ecofix promotes sustainable road maintenance.
Advantages Over Traditional Methods
Traditional road repair techniques, such as hot mix asphalt, require dry surfaces and are ineffective during the monsoon. Ecofix, however, can be applied in water-filled potholes without the need for dewatering or tack coats. The repaired surface is immediately ready for traffic, reducing disruptions. According to Dr. Satish Pandey from CSIR-CRRI, Ecofix outperforms conventional methods, offering long-lasting repairs that reduce the frequency of maintenance.

Pilot Project and Future Plans
In December 2024, BBMP launched a trial of Ecofix on Avenue Road near Anjaneya Temple, successfully repairing potholes in collaboration with CSIR-CRRI and Ramaco Global Services. Encouraged by the results, BBMP plans to expand the use of Ecofix across Bengaluru. Dr. B.S. Prahlad, BBMP’s Chief Engineer, described the technology as a “game-changer” for urban road maintenance.
