Supreme Court Issues Notice to Centre, States Over North India Floods and Landslides, Citing Illegal Tree Felling

"The situation is extremely serious. Videos of a large number of logs being washed away in Himachal Pradesh's floodwaters indicate a massive scale of environmental damage," the bench said.

The Supreme Court has taken serious note of the devastating floods and landslides in several North Indian states, including Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, and has issued notices to the central and state governments, as well as concerned departments.

The Court observed the large number of logs floating in the floodwaters and believes that illegal tree felling is a significant cause of the disaster.

A bench of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran issued the notice, giving the governments two weeks to respond. The court's decision was prompted by media reports and videos showing extensive tree damage.
