Congress MLA from Karwar-Ankola, Satish Sail, has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a case of illegal iron ore mining and money laundering. Following the arrest, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar accused the central agency of targeting only members of the Congress party.
Sail was arrested last night after a day-long interrogation by officials from the ED's Bengaluru zonal office. Questioning the necessity of the arrest, Shivakumar stated, "Why was it necessary to arrest him? The ED is targeting only Congress MLAs. They are doing everything they can to target us."
The arrest is linked to a case where thousands of tonnes of illegally mined iron ore were allegedly transported from the Uttara Kannada district. Sail was previously sentenced to jail in connection with the same case. The ED had raided his properties in August and issued multiple summonses, which he reportedly failed to respond to or provide a reason for his absence.
According to officials, Sail was found to be uncooperative during the questioning, which led to his arrest. He is expected to be produced before a court today. The officials have also informed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) about the developments.
