BBMP Dissolved: When Will Greater Bengaluru Authority Elections Be Held?

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is now history, replaced by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). For the last five years, Bengaluru has had no elected local representatives. Citizens, former corporators, and leaders like Padmanabha Reddy are pressing the government to stop delaying and announce elections at the earliest.

Bengaluru’s governance system has undergone a massive change. The BBMP has been dissolved and the city is now under the Greater Bengaluru Authority. Since September 10, 2020, when the tenure of elected representatives ended, the city has been functioning without corporators. The last civic elections were held in 2015.Sumitomo, Yaskawa, and JFE Shoji to Boost Karnataka’s Industrial Growth with Major Investments..!

Former corporators blame successive state governments for intentionally stalling elections. According to them, whichever party is in power has avoided elections to prevent local representatives from challenging MLAs’ dominance.

As per the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, local self-governments should have elected representatives. Ironically, this has been ignored in the state’s capital, Bengaluru. Now with the formation of GBA and five new municipal corporations under its ambit, citizens and aspiring corporators are questioning: when will elections finally be held?Bengaluru Freedom Park Protest: Banjara, Bovi, and Koracha Communities Demand Fair SC Reservation..!

Senior BJP leader Padmanabha Reddy has also raised the issue on social media, demanding that the government take steps immediately and conduct the long-pending civic elections instead of hiding behind technical excuses.

In its affidavit to the Supreme Court, the state government has promised that the final notification on ward reservation will be issued by November 30, 2025, after which the State Election Commission will begin preparations. The entire process, including ward delimitation, is expected to take at least two more months.Indian Armed Forces: First All-Women Tri-Services Crew to Circumnavigate the Globe

The notification establishing five new corporations under GBA was issued on July 19, 2025. Objections and suggestions were invited until August 18, after which the final notification is expected in early September. The delimitation commission is scheduled to complete ward boundary processes by November 1, 2025.

While the government has provided this timeline, citizens and corporators remain skeptical, questioning whether elections will really happen this time or be pushed further.
