Opposition to Caste Census: Key Meeting of Veerashaiva-Lingayat Leaders Under Yediyurappa’s Leadership

Leaders of the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community, opposing the state government’s caste census, held a significant meeting under the leadership of former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa to strategize for community unity.

BJP leaders from the Lingayat community convened the meeting, expressing outrage over the state government’s alleged attempt to divide the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community under the pretext of the caste census. Discussions focused on recording ‘Hindu’ in the religion column and ‘Veerashaiva-Lingayat’ in the caste column of the census. It was decided to engage with the All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha, community elders, and heads of religious institutions to build consensus on this matter.

The meeting, held at a private hotel in the city, was attended by B.S. Yediyurappa, BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra, former Chief Ministers Jagadish Shettar and Basavaraj Bommai, Union Minister Bhagwanth Khuba, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Arvind Bellad, former MPs Prabhakar Kore and G.M. The meeting emphasized the need for accurate information dissemination during the conference. Speaking at the event, Yediyurappa urged the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community to set aside minor differences and demonstrate unity.

Yediyurappa warned that failure to provide clear information in the caste census, being conducted by the state Congress government, could create issues for future generations. He advised the community to unite, make appropriate decisions, and effectively communicate them to the public.

Following the meeting, Prabhakar Kore, M.P. Renukacharya, and Veeranna Charantimath met with Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre, who is also the General Secretary of the All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha, to discuss the matter further.
