Officials explain that this is a common form of cyber fraud where scammers trick people into downloading fake applications to steal personal and financial information.

A 64-year-old businessman from Hosathippasandra, identified as Ravikumar, has fallen victim to a cybercrime, losing ₹5.81 lakh after clicking on a malicious APK (Android Package Kit) file received on WhatsApp. Based on his complaint, a case has been registered by the East Division Police.

According to the complaint, Ravikumar received an APK file disguised as an e-challan from the Regional Transport Office (RTO). Believing it to be a legitimate message, he clicked on the link, which led to the unauthorized deduction of ₹5,81,500 from his savings account. The police have registered an FIR against an unknown individual under the IT Act and Section 318 (fraud) of the BNS. This incident is the latest in a series of similar cybercrimes. Recently, former Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda’s account was also reportedly hacked, resulting in a loss of ₹3 lakh. Authorities have warned the public against clicking on unknown APK files sent via WhatsApp, SMS, email, or social media platforms.
