Amid ongoing debates surrounding the caste census, various communities have issued guidelines on what caste to specify in the census forms. Basavana Gideva Sri Swamiji of Chalavadi Math in Chitradurga has directed the Chalavadi community to write “Buddhist” as their religion and “Scheduled Caste” with “Chalavadi” as the specific caste.

Chitradurga: Amid ongoing debates surrounding the caste census, various communities have issued guidelines on what caste to specify in the census forms. Basavana Gideva Sri Swamiji of Chalavadi Math in Chitradurga has directed the Chalavadi community to write “Buddhist” as their religion and “Scheduled Caste” with “Chalavadi” as the specific caste. The caste census has already been a contentious and confusing issue. In Karnataka, where thousands of castes exist, there have been numerous discussions and controversies with some advocating against the caste census altogether. However, now that the caste census has commenced, Swamiji has provided clear instructions to the Chalavadi community regarding what to write in the caste column. Addressing concerns, Swamiji clarified that writing “Buddhist” in the caste column will not result in the loss of benefits currently available to the community under the Hindu religion. “There is no need for anyone to fear. The same benefits that were available earlier will continue to be provided now,” Swamiji assured.
