Shreyas Iyer Requests 6-Month Break from Red Ball Cricket: Due to Recurring Back Issues

Reason for Break: Iyer experienced back spasms and stiffness while playing extended formats, making it difficult to sustain play over four or more days. He informed BCCI via email on September 24, pulling out of the ongoing India A vs. Australia A four-day match in Lucknow after scoring just 8 in his only innings. This follows a history of back problems, including missing the India-England Test series last year and several Ranji Trophy games due to similar issues.

Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has formally requested a six-month break from red-ball cricket, citing recurring back spasms and stiffness, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on September 25, 2025. The decision comes after Iyer underwent back surgery in the UK earlier this year and has been managing his recovery, but recent flare-ups during longer-format games prompted the hiatus to focus on building endurance and overall fitness.
