India's smartphone exports have seen a significant increase, reaching $1.53 billion in August 2025, according to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). This marks a 39% rise compared to the $1.09 billion in exports during the same month last year.
The new data from ICEA directly refutes recent reports suggesting a decline in India's smartphone exports. The association clarified that it is more accurate to compare monthly data on a year-over-year basis rather than month-over-month. Additionally, the ICEA noted that exports are typically lower in August and September due to new product launches and increased domestic demand during the festive season.
A major driver of this growth is the U.S. market, where India's smartphone exports have more than doubled. Exports to the U.S. jumped from $388 million in August 2024 to $965 million in August 2025, a remarkable 148% increase. For the first five months of the current fiscal year (April to August 2025), India's total smartphone exports have reached $11.7 billion, a 55% increase from the $7.6 billion recorded during the same period last year.
The ICEA stated that these figures demonstrate the success of the government's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Over the last five years, smartphones under the PLI scheme have been the biggest export commodity for India. The report also highlighted a major shift in the global market, with India now surpassing China to become the largest exporter of smartphones to the United States.
