Good News for Kannada Film Industry from State Government... What's This New OTT Platform?

Amid the movie ticket price controversy, the Karnataka government is gearing up to launch an OTT platform dedicated to Kannada films. The committee is preparing a blueprint, with expectations of modeling the project on Kerala's C-Space.

A few weeks ago, the Karnataka state government issued a significant order regarding movie ticket prices. Accordingly, ticket prices have been fixed at ₹200 in all theaters in the state, including multiplexes. However, some production companies, including Hombale Films, have obtained interim stay orders from the court against this government directive.

In the midst of these developments, the state government has taken up a new initiative that will benefit the Kannada film industry and movie audiences. There have long been allegations that OTT platforms neglect Kannada films and show no interest in acquiring them. Even star actors' films do not receive fair prices, leading to complaints. Many producers and directors have expressed their grievances on this issue.

Now, the state government itself has come to the aid of the Kannada film industry and is moving forward to launch its own OTT platform. This OTT launch proposal is not new; Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had proposed it in the previous budget.

A committee has been formed for the establishment of the OTT. This committee will prepare a blueprint regarding the OTT's creation, its operations, and other details. It will submit a report to the government on the cost of OTT production, the grants required from the government, and other matters. The Commissioner of the Information and Broadcasting Department will chair this committee.Fossil Leather Analog Blue Dial Men's Watch-Me3263, Band Color:Brown

In the neighboring state of Kerala, the government launched an OTT platform called 'C-Space' in 2024. It supports the film industry by exclusively screening Malayalam films. Through this OTT, audiences can watch Malayalam films at lower prices. 'C-Space' operates on a pay-per-view model, with 50% of the collected revenue given to producers. A similar model OTT is expected for the Kannada film industry.
