Dr. Kota Harinarayana, the architect of the Tejas fighter jet program and former chief designer at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), has advised against India purchasing Russia’s Su-57 or the U.S.’s F-35 fighter jets. Despite the need for fifth-generation fighter jets, he strongly advocates prioritizing indigenous development.
Dr. Harinarayana emphasizes that self-reliance in the defense sector is crucial for India. He warns that importing foreign fighter jets could hinder the progress of India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. He opposes the acquisition of Russia’s Su-57 Felon and the U.S.’s F-35 Lightning II. Currently, India lacks fifth-generation fighter jets, and even the Rafale does not meet this standard. However, Dr. Harinarayana insists on focusing on indigenous technology rather than relying on foreign purchases. Serving as ADA’s chief designer and program director from 1989 to 2004, he demonstrated India’s capability to develop fighter jets through the Tejas program. He has worked on the flying wing design essential for fifth-generation fighter jets.
Dr. Harinarayana points out that the Su-57 has limited stealth capabilities, with inadequate radar-evading features and stealth coatings. Its production cannot be significantly scaled up, and it relies heavily on Russia’s supply chain. While the F-35 is technologically advanced, it comes with restricted operational freedom and is challenging to integrate with indigenous systems like Tejas, according to Dr. Harinarayana.
