The minister noted that doctors often prescribe sweet cough syrups for children as they are easier to administer compared to injections, which children fear. However, recent incidents have shown that several children have died due to harmful syrups. In this context, Minister Gundu Rao has ordered officials to exercise utmost caution in Karnataka.

Bengaluru: In light of incidents where children died due to cough syrups in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and other states, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has instructed state drug control authorities to maintain strict vigilance over cough syrups in Karnataka.

The minister noted that doctors often prescribe sweet cough syrups for children as they are easier to administer compared to injections, which children fear. However, recent incidents have shown that several children have died due to harmful syrups. It has come to light that illegal cough syrups are being manufactured and supplied to medical stores, necessitating a thorough investigation. The minister also highlighted the issue of fake doctors who, under the guise of being medical professionals, set up name boards and prescribe syrups to children, driven by greed for money, higher commissions, or percentages. The state has imposed strict monitoring on pharmaceutical companies, with rigorous testing and inspection of medicines. The minister pointed out that while Karnataka has a robust system in place, some northern Indian states lack such measures. He mentioned that discussions are underway at the central government level to adopt Karnataka’s model across all states. He also advised the public to use medicines cautiously.
