A massive fire, reportedly caused by a short circuit, erupted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, resulting in the tragic deaths of six patients. Five other patients are in serious condition. The danger was exacerbated by toxic fumes, necessitating the emergency evacuation of 24 patients. Police and rescue personnel are continuing search and investigation efforts.
Deadly Blaze in SMS Trauma Center -
The devastating incident occurred on Sunday night when a fire broke out in the ICU of the SMS Hospital, a premier healthcare facility in Jaipur. The short circuit quickly led to a raging fire, claiming the lives of six patients and leaving five others critically ill. Due to the rapid spread of the fire and the release of poisonous gases, 24 patients were immediately evacuated from the unit.
The Trauma Center on the hospital's second floor houses two intensive care units: a Trauma ICU and a Semi-ICU. In total, 24 patients were admitted, with 11 in the Trauma ICU and 13 in the Semi-ICU. According to Anurag Dhakad, in-charge of the Trauma Center, the fire originated from a short circuit in the Trauma ICU. Rescue and Evacuation Efforts -
Hospital staff, including nurses and ward personnel, immediately initiated a rescue operation, quickly moving patients on trolleys to a safe location. However, six patients were in extremely critical condition. Despite attempts at Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), doctors were unable to save them. The six deceased include two women and four men. Following the incident, police and rescue teams rushed to the scene and are continuing their investigation.
