Addressing concerns over severe pollution in the National Capital Territory (NCT) region, the Supreme Court has issued an order allowing the sale and limited bursting of green crackers for the upcoming Diwali festival in Delhi and its surrounding areas.
A bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran issued the directives following a petition regarding firecracker usage during the festival. The court has permitted the sale of green crackers between October 18 and October 21 in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
The court relaxed the firecracker ban after considering a joint request from both the Central Government and the Delhi Government. The bench noted that a balanced approach must be taken to ensure that minimal damage is caused by firecrackers. The ruling allows for the use of crackers in a restricted manner without compromising the environment. The Supreme Court has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) of the NCR to closely monitor pollution levels during the festive period. Crucially, the court stated that the firecrackers manufactured under this order must not be sold outside Delhi and the NCR. Furthermore, it warned that any manufacturer found violating the rules would have their licenses revoked.
