Kabul/Islamabad: In a shocking escalation of border tensions, Pakistan's airstrikes in Afghanistan's Paktika province have claimed the lives of eight people, including three promising Afghan cricketers. The strikes targeted the Urgun and Barmal districts of Paktika late Friday, breaching a 48-hour ceasefire agreement between the two nations, according to Afghan media outlet Tolo News. The deceased cricketers—Kabeer (also known as Kabir Agha), Sibghatullah, and Haroon—from Urgun district were returning from a friendly match in Sharana, the provincial capital, when their vehicle was hit. In a heartfelt statement on X, the ACB expressed "deepest sorrow and grief" over the "tragic martyrdom" of these "brave cricketers," labeling the incident a "cowardly attack carried out by the Pakistani regime." The board described it as a "great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community, its athletes, and the cricketing family," extending condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Paktika.
