Significance of the Statement

The Minister's statement underscored the joint responsibility of the two forces:

The Army's Role: Primarily responsible for safeguarding the nation's international borders and protecting against external threats. Primarily responsible for internal security, maintaining law and order, tackling terrorism, managing disasters, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the common citizen—all of which are essential for the nation's stability and progress. By calling them both "pillars," he acknowledged that peace and stability at home are just as vital as security at the borders, and the sacrifices made by police personnel are equally valuable to the country.

About Police Commemoration Day (October 21):

The Origin: The day is observed to honor the ten brave police personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) who were ambushed and killed by heavily armed Chinese troops on October 21, 1959, in the Hot Springs area of Ladakh.

Tribute: The day is dedicated to commemorating the supreme sacrifice made by these 10 martyrs and all other police personnel across the country who have lost their lives in the line of duty since India's independence.

National Police Memorial (NPM): The main national ceremony is held at the NPM in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. This memorial complex was dedicated to the nation in 2018 and features the 'Wall of Valour,' where the names of all police martyrs are inscribed.

The day serves as a national reminder of the difficult and often dangerous duties performed by the police forces every single day.
