A software engineer from Pune was arrested by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on suspicion of having links with the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda. The arrest highlights a growing concern over the convergence of the cyber world with terrorism.
On Monday, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested the software engineer for his suspected connections to the terrorist group. The arrested individual, identified as Zubair Hangargekar, was found to possess evidence indicating that Osama bin Laden, the founder of Al-Qaeda, was his role model.
Following the arrest, authorities confiscated incriminating materials from Hangargekar, including photographs of him building a bomb using an AK-47 rifle, an Urdu translation of Bin Laden’s speeches, and other related items.
Hangargekar, who is well-educated, has been placed in police custody until November 4. He is accused of engaging in anti-national activities and conspiring to carry out terrorist attacks in Maharashtra and other major cities. The accused is currently under ATS surveillance and has been booked under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Evidence suggests that Hangargekar was an ardent follower of Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. Reportedly inspired by Bin Laden's speeches, he was actively involved in confirmed efforts to radicalize and recruit youth into the organization.
