Bengaluru: In connection with the mobile hacking case of Sandalwood star couple Upendra and Priyanka Upendra, the Sadashivanagar Police have arrested a suspect named Vikas Kumar, a native of Bihar.
However, the police team that traveled to Bihar to arrest the accused was shocked to discover a massive cybercrime network operating there.
In Vikas Kumar’s village, it was found that over 150 young men, aged between 20 and 25, are involved in organized cybercrime activities.
The arrested accused, Vikas Kumar, is now in police custody, and further interrogation is underway.
How Did the Hacking Happen?
On September 15, actress Priyanka Upendra had ordered a few items online. Shortly after, she received a malicious link on her mobile phone. The moment she clicked it, her phone and WhatsApp account were hacked.
The cybercriminal, after gaining control of her WhatsApp, sent messages to several people in her contact list, claiming that she urgently needed ₹55,000 and requested them to transfer the money.
When Priyanka tried to call from her husband Upendra’s and her manager’s phone numbers, the hacker hacked those numbers too. OPPO A5 5G (Aurora Green, 6GB RAM, 128GB Storage) with No Cost EMI/Additional Exchange Offers
Believing that the messages were genuinely from Priyanka, a few acquaintances transferred money to the fraudster’s account. Shockingly, even the couple’s son transferred ₹50,000, thinking his mother had sent the message.
Some people, sensing something unusual, tried calling Priyanka’s number but the calls were immediately disconnected. Realizing they had been duped, the family filed a complaint with the Sadashivanagar Police Station.
By the time the complaint was registered, the cyber fraudsters had already received ₹1.5 lakh in their accounts.
Following the complaint, the police acted swiftly, tracked the accused to Dashrathpur in Bihar, and arrested Vikas Kumar.
Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent and origins of this cybercrime network, which appears to be part of a large, organized racket operating from Bihar. Also Read: Man Arrested for Cheating Farmers with Fake Tractor Rental Promise!
