Oil Diplomacy: The Central Focus

Russia likely to offer additional discounts on crude oil supplies. Expansion of local currency (rupee-ruble) settlement mechanism to reduce India’s growing trade deficit with Russia.

New long-term energy contracts through Russian entities not under Western sanctions to ensure uninterrupted supply. Despite U.S. accusations that India’s purchase of discounted Russian oil is indirectly funding Moscow’s war in Ukraine, India has saved billions of dollars and ensured energy security.

However, recent U.S. imposition of 25% additional tariffs on countries buying Russian oil has created fresh pressure. Indian oil imports from Russia have dropped to a three-year low, but New Delhi remains determined to protect its interests.

As retired Major General Dilawar Singh rightly pointed out: “Even under American pressure, maintaining balanced and strong relations with Russia, the US, and other nations is in India’s core national interest.

This summit is ultimately about India walking the tightrope securing energy and defense needs from its oldest strategic partner while managing tensions with the West. Also Read: Dharmasthala Conspiracy Case: Karnataka HC Directs State to Respond on Plea for Comprehensive Probe!
