Bengaluru: "Corruption is rampant in every department of the state, and Karnataka ranks fifth in the country on the corruption list. If this menace is not contained, a terrible danger in the future is inevitable for society," warned Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa, expressing deep concern.He was speaking on Wednesday at the release function of the travelogue ‘Overseas Travelogue,’ written by advocate Thulavanur Shankarappa, where he presented alarming statistics on the extent of corruption in the state.

Karnataka VS Kerala: The Corruption Gap

"Today, while Kerala has only 10% corruption, in Karnataka, it stands at 63%. I have had the opportunity to witness all this after becoming Upa Lokayukta. Corruption has grown like a banyan tree in every department," Justice Veerappa lamented.Speaking about the measures he is taking to eradicate corruption, he said, "Wherever I go—hospitals, schools, or hostels—I encourage the staff there to take an oath for the eradication of corruption. The advocates must also participate in this endeavor (Yajna) to strive for social reform and the annihilation of the wicked."

Corruption and the Legal Fraternity

Women Also 'Powerful' in Corruption

Justice Veerappa highlighted another aspect of corruption, stating, "Today we say women are very powerful. But they have become powerful even in corruption. Therefore, the legal fraternity alone can effectively decide how and from where to curb corruption."

'Separate Lokayukta Office for Every Department'

Speaking at the event, Senior Advocate M. T. Nanayya regretted, "Today, there is corruption in all departments, and the situation is such that there is a need to open a separate Lokayukta office for every department."

He warned, "Earning excessive money at a young age is not a sign of a healthy society. Therefore, if parents reform, children will also reform. Otherwise, the nation and the constitution will fail, and society's peace of mind will be disturbed."Senior Justice Anu Shivraman, along with office bearers of the High Court unit, including K. Chandrakanta Patil, B. R. Harini, Sandhya U. Prabhu, Atma V. Hiremath, H. N. Thammaiah, and other advocates, were present at the event.
