Mobile Tampering Alert: How to Spot Counterfeit Smartphones & Protect Your Device!?

In the smartphone market, where mobiles are being sold based on high demand, one can avoid mobile tampering by checking whether a phone is genuine or fake before purchasing it.

In the rapidly evolving 5G era, high-end smartphones are becoming more accessible, with feature-rich devices available for as low as ₹7,000. However, this boom has also led to a surge in "Mobile Tampering," where counterfeit phones are meticulously designed to mimic original branded devices. Fraudsters are now producing clones that are nearly indistinguishable from the real ones, posing a major risk to unsuspecting buyers.

Fortunately, users can verify the authenticity of their devices using simple, government-backed tools. Here is your guide to staying safe.

How to Identify a Fake Smartphone

Before you commit to a purchase, especially from unofficial sellers, perform these checks:

Examine the Branding: Often, counterfeiters use slightly misspelled brand names (e.g., "Sammsung" instead of Samsung). Inspect the logo and font for any inconsistencies.

Verify via KYM (Know Your Mobile): The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) offers a facility to check if your mobile's IMEI is genuine or blacklisted.

Find your IMEI: Dial *#06# on your phone or check the original box/battery.

SMS Method: Type KYM <15-digit IMEI number> and send it to 14422.

KYM App: You can also download the official "KYM - Know Your Mobile" app from the Play Store or App Store to verify details like manufacturer, brand, and model.

What to Do If Your Mobile is Stolen?

If your device is lost or stolen, immediate action is required to prevent data misuse:

Find My Device: Use the built-in "Find My Device" (Android) or "Find My iPhone" (iOS) features to track the location. Even if the phone is offline, you might see its last known location.

Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR): Visit the Sanchar Saathi Portal to block your stolen phone. By blacklisting the IMEI, you ensure the device cannot be used on any Indian network.

Legal Action: Always file a police complaint. The complaint copy and IMEI number are mandatory for blocking the device through the CEIR portal. Also Read: QR Code Scam Alert: Think Before You Scan! Essential Tips to Stay Safe from "Quishing"!
