GBA Polls: Draft Electoral Rolls for 369 Wards Expected by January 19; SEC Intensifies Preparations!?

In a major milestone, the commission is expected to publish the ward-wise draft electoral rolls by January 19, 2026, setting the stage for the city's first civic polls in over a decade.

Following the Supreme Court’s definitive ultimatum, the Karnataka State Election Commission (SEC) has moved into high gear to finalize the electoral roadmap for the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). In a major milestone, the commission is expected to publish the ward-wise draft electoral rolls by January 19, 2026, setting the stage for the city's first civic polls in over a decade.

The Challenges of Delimitation

The upcoming elections will be a historic first for the GBA, transitioning from the 198-ward BBMP structure to a massive 369-ward system spread across five city corporations.

Complexity: Mapping voters from the 28 Assembly constituencies into 369 newly carved-out wards is a monumental task.

The BLO's Role: Over the past few weeks, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been conducting rigorous door-to-door verification and physical mapping to ensure that voters are correctly assigned to their respective new wards.

Key Deadlines for Voters

The draft roll, expected this Sunday (Jan 19), is not the final list. It serves as a window for citizens to ensure their names are registered correctly in the new system.

Objection Period: Once the draft is published, voters will have a limited window to file claims and objections (corrections, deletions, or new additions).

Final List: As per the affidavit submitted by the SEC to the Supreme Court, the final error-free voter list will be officially published on March 16, 2026. Why it Matters

Bengaluru has been governed by administrators since September 2020. The publication of the draft rolls on January 19 will be the most concrete evidence yet that the decade-long "civic exile" is finally coming to an end, placing the power back into the hands of the city's 1.2 crore residents.
