Despite India got rid of oil crisis and even the first few ships and containers have moved from Strait of Hormuz, and Indian Shipments are reaching Indian shores, It’s still a wakeup call for India, the situation in the last two weeks has proved India’s vulnerability with oil.

India buys 50% of its natural gas from international market, of which 20% India buys from Qatar.

The Middle East war crisis has deeply affected the supply of natural gas globally. More than 750 ships and thousands of feeder vessels are stuck in Strait of Hormuz, though we have a sigh of relief as Indian shipments have started moving from the crucial place, it’s an eye opener for the policy makers on few elements.

India buys 20% of natural gas for its domestic consumption from Qatar. After Iran’s missiles did strike the Qatar gas fields, Qatar’s biggest manufacturer and exporter of natural gas “Qatar Energy” stopped the production and disrupted their Asian supply.

To tackle the existing demand-supply chain, Indian Petroleum Ministry has given new guidelines and has segregated the key sectors as 4 priority areas.   

Firstly, the supply of natural gas will be maintained at 100 % of their average gas consumption of the last six months of the domestic piped supply, CNG for transport, LPG production, for pipeline compressor fuel and other imperative pipeline operational needs.

Secondly, the supply of natural gas for fertilizer plants will ensure at 70 % of their average gas consumption of the last six moths

Third priority is the supply of natural gas to the Tea industries at 80 %.

Fourth is to consolidate all the industries and taking average of consumption of last six months of all the industries and to supply through their own network.

Minister of Petroleum and natural gas, Mr. Puri stated the new natural gas supply policy would make the demand-supply chain more stable.
