Maharashtra has passed the anti-conversion bill, to be tabled today in legislative council.

The Maharashtra dharma swatantrya adhiniyam (Maharashtra Freedom of Religion bill) 2026 is presented by the CM Devendra Fadnavis, and surprisingly supported by Udbhav Thyakre led Shiv Sena.  

Speeking to media, the CM said Maharashtra is not the first state to pass such bill. Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttar khand have already passed the anti-conversion bills.

The bill focuses on fraudulent, eloped and lured women who faces complications after the marriage fails. The bill will be the solution to coercion and inducement form of marriage.

The existing bill is vague on few grounds which will be corrected in the new bill. Bhakar Jadav, senior leader from Shivsena supported the bill, since it does not target any community in particular.

Presented by the CM, the bill aims at transparency and infringes upon the freedom of Marriage Assured by the Indian constitution.

Senior Congress leader and the former Minister Aslam Shaikh demanded that the bill should be sent to Joint Parliamentary committee for further discussion and approval.
