The Karnataka government has formulated the 'Ivu Nammava Ivu Nammava Bill-2026' to safeguard inter-caste marriages and prevent honour killings.

The Karnataka government has formulated the 'Ivu Nammava Ivu Nammava Bill-2026' to safeguard inter-caste marriages and prevent honour killings. Rural Development and Information Technology Minister Priyank Kharge tabled the bill in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

Key Provisions of the Bill:

Minimum 5 years imprisonment for those responsible for honour killings or causing death in the name of honour.

Minimum 3 years imprisonment and fine up to ₹1 lakh for causing grievous injury to inter-caste couples.

Cases where marriage is promised, sexual relations occur, and then refused due to caste will be treated as rape with strict punishment.

Refusal of marriage under family pressure or any caste pretext carries imprisonment from 5 years to life.

Illegal assemblies (katta panchayats), conspiracy, tampering with evidence, and related offences are punishable with non-bailable sentences.

Objectives of the Bill:

Ensure freedom of choice and protection for inter-caste marriages.

Establish special courts for speedy trials and justice.

Set up helplines, awareness programmes, and oversight committees.
