This has reduced the total number of contestants from the initial 789 valid nominations to 722 candidates now left in the electoral battle across the state's 126 assembly constituencies.

The remaining withdrawers were all independent candidates, according to election officials.The main contest is expected to be between the BJP-led NDA alliance and the opposition parties.

Prominent leaders, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, are still in the fray. The elections are scheduled to be held on April 9, with vote counting set for May 4.
