Cloak-and-Dagger Diplomacy: Iran Delegation Abandons Air Travel Amid Missile Threats

The high-voltage diplomatic mission from Iran has reported a histrionic security scare that forced them to unrestraint air travel and return to Tehran using a combination of bus, train, and car. The delegation, which consisted of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, was in Islamabad, for crucial peace talks with the U.S. (represented by Vice President J.D. Vance) over the weekend of April 11–12, 2026. Amazon Brand - Myx Women's Schiffli Embroidery Ethnic Dress | Fit and Flare | Knee Length (Available in Plus Sizes)

According to Iranian political analyst Mohammad Marandi, who was part of the delegates, the team received credible intelligence while flying to Islamabad that their aircraft could be targeted in a missile or drone attack.

To avoid the risk, the delegation's plane made an unscheduled landing in the eastern Iranian city of Mashhad. From there, the officials split up and continued their journey to the Pakistani capital using a mix of trains, private cars, and buses to avoid detection and maintain a low-profile arena.

Following the conclusion of the talks on April 14, the team chose to return via a similar "secret" land route rather than flying out of Islamabad, citing continued distrust and security concerns.

While U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that negotiations might resume in a few days, the Iranian delegation's land-only return journey highlights the massive security gap currently defining Iran-Pakistan-U.S. relations. As long as Pakistan is involved, these threats are normal, anybody can surprise them, Baluch, Afghan and internal incumbency can lead to any unpleasant incident.
