During a strategy meeting of the INDIA bloc organised at Mallikarjun Kharge's residence yesterday, Rahul Gandhi made a stern warning to the TMC regarding the presence of their MPs. TMC's Sagarika Ghose stated that several of their MPs might be absent as they are busy campaigning for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.

Rahul Gandhi reiterated that any abstention would effectively be a "vote for the BJP." He said that the opposition must show a united front with full strength to oppose the government's specific version of the bill, which can be an advantage to BJP.

Other leaders, including the DMK's T.R. Baalu and Shiv Sena's (UBT) Uddhav Thackeray, supported Gandhi, with Thackeray even offering to speak directly to Mamata Banerjee to ensure full participation. Later Sagarika Ghose confirmed, she is talking to Mahua Moitra. Omar Abdullah too has joined the opposition as he feels BJP will have a better edge in J and K with this bill. As far as BJP is concerned, it’s trying to push three bills.

Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill: To increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850.

Delimitation Bill, 2026: To redraw constituency boundaries based on the 2011 Census data.

Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill: To apply these changes to legislatures in Delhi, J&K, and Puducherry. Islamabad Accord, aftermath, Iranian delegates had to go back in train, car and bus to Iran.

Opposition concerns are South Indian states gets lesser representatives in Lok Sabha, and why the 2011 Census is being used for a 2026 exercise when the 2027 Census is already underway. However, they do not have issue with 33% women Quota.
