Evidence-Based Governance: ISRO’s High-Resolution Mapping Revolutionizes Panchayati Raj

From Space to the Streets: ISRO Empowers Rural India with Village-Level Precision

Who ever thought ISRO is all about Space and navigation, they were wrong. In a major push for grassroots governance and decentralized planning, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed high-resolution land use and land cover (LULC) mapping for the entire country. The project partnered with Ministry of Panchayati Raj, provides data at an unprecedented 1:10,000 scale, allowing for village-level precision that was previously unavailable on a national scale. The mapping uses a 1:10,000 scale, which is significantly more detailed than the previous 1:50,000 or 1:250,000 scales. This allows local bodies to identify specific land features, water bodies, and infrastructure at the Gram Panchayat level.

The data has been made available to government organizations and is integrated into the Gram Manchitra portal, a spatial planning application for Gram Panchayats.

This high-resolution mapping enables "evidence-based planning," helping local leaders decide where to implement welfare schemes, build roads (under Gram Sadak Yojana), or manage local water resources effectively.

Precise mapping helps in monitoring agricultural ecosystems, forest conversions, and the health of surface water bodies on an annual basis.

The 1:10,000 scale is specifically useful for planning rural road networks and identifying suitable sites for community assets. 313 Billionaires and Counting: Decoding India’s Wealth Acceleration Saga
