Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varun Sharma clarified that the blast was not a low-intensity or accidental explosion but an "attempted failed detonation" aimed at damaging the rail infrastructure in a massive scale.
The individual attempting to trigger the explosive device was killed instantly by the blast. Police are presently working to identify the deceased, who is supposed to be the primary operator of the device.
The blast happened on a strategic stretch of track. Authorities believe the evil intent was to disrupt rail connectivity in the region, which could have led to a catastrophic derailment of passenger or freight trains and could cause many deaths.
State Forensic Science Laboratory and the Bomb Disposal Squad have deployed their teams shortly after the incident. They have recovered remnants of the detonator and chemical traces to determine the origin and type of explosive used.
After the fatal attempt, security has been tightened at all railway stations and vulnerable points across Punjab. The Government Railway Police and Punjab Police are conducting joint operations along all the major tracks.
Despite no organization or individual have claimed the responsibility, intelligence agencies are investigating a potential "narco-terror" or sleeper cell link, given the sophisticated nature of the attempted detonation. Game Over, Islamabad: Russia Takes the Reins of the Mideast Crisis
