Dhaka: The River Teesta which pours down from Himalayas and goes through West Bengal and flows to Bangladesh is in crossroads. Mamata Banerjee had blocked the deal since 2011, mentioning water scarcity for North Bengal farmers. With the BJP now taking power in Kolkata, the Ministry of External Affairs is intending a fresh look at the 2011 agreement.

The Centre continues that any agreement must be fair and equitable, ensuring the irrigation needs of West Bengal's five northern districts while fulfilling India's neighbourhood-first commitment to Dhaka.

India must also consider the security aspect as the river flows through, Siliguri (chicken neck) and we cannot have China’s influence over the region. To prevent Chinese encroachment, India has voluntarily offered its own technical and financial package to implement the Teesta restoration project. PM Modi recently announced that an Indian technical team would visit Dhaka to conduct a feasibility study, effectively competing with Beijing's proposal.

New Delhi is willing to engage with the Tarique Rahman administration. Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi, has indicated that a "cohesive Indian approach," unburdened by federal friction, is now possible. Recently, Bangladesh National Party’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman met Wang Yi in Beijing, for exploring the possibility of working on Teesta project and China has showed interest in investing on the project. Looks like Teesta is going to be not as easy as River Indus and Ravi. But the government has to take initiatives at lightning speed to avoid the future Chines shocks.
