The explosion destroyed a busy market area. Lakki Marwat is located in northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border, a region that has seen a significant upsurge in militant activity recently. Security forces and rescue teams rushed to the site shortly after the blast to transport victims to nearby hospitals and barricade off the area for investigation.
As of Tuesday afternoon, no militant group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack, and its difficult for the Pakistan’s authorities to trace the culprits, as too many groups like BLA, Taliban and Sindh are active in the location.
This attack is made after the surge in violence in the region. Just days before, on May 10, 2026, a significant suicide bombing in the neighbouring Bannu district targeted a police station and checkpoint, resulting in the deaths of 12 police officers.
Northwestern Pakistan has witnessed heightened instability since late 2022, following the collapse of a ceasefire between the government and the TTP. Attacks targeting both security personnel and public gathering places like markets have become increasingly frequent in these border districts.
