Assam: Veteran Ajanta Neog and Grassroots Leaders Join Cabinet to Drive Infrastructure and Regional Stability

Strengthening the Foundations: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Expands Cabinet with Veterans and Tea Tribe Leaders to Bolster Assam’s Development

Assam: In a substantial cabinet expansion on May 12, 2026, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma added four new ministers into his cabinet, arranging grassroots leadership and veteran administrative experience. Among the significant inductees is Ajanta Neog, the state's longest-serving woman legislator, whose inclusion reinforces the government's focus on Upper Assam and the influential tea tribe community. Ajanta Neog represents Golaghat from 2001, A six-time MLA, Neog holds the dissimilarity of being Assam's longest-serving woman legislator. Formerly an important personality in Congress party before joining the BJP, she has previously handled critical portfolios like Finance and PWD. Her inclusion is seen as a move to maintain stability in the Finance department and strengthen the party's hold in the Golaghat-Jorhat belt.

A protuberant leader from the Tea Tribe community was also added on. This move is strategically designed to consolidate the BJP’s core support base among the tea garden workers, who are a decisive factor in nearly 40 assembly seats in Upper and Central Assam.

By bringing in a veteran like Neog, the Sarma government aims to accelerate infrastructure projects that have been part of the 2025–26 budget. The presence of tea tribe and regional leaders is a clear signal of the party's Sabka Saath approach, aiming to address localized grievances regarding land rights and wages in the tea sector.
