India hosts high-stakes BRICS Foreign Ministers Meet! Lavrov & Araghchi arrive as New Delhi

New Delhi: India is hosting much awaited BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in New Delhi on May 14-15, 2026. This gathering is a predecessor to the main BRICS Summit later this year and marks a significant moment for India’s rotational presidency of the now 11-member bloc. The most salient feature of this gathering is, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi have confirmed their occurrence. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is likely to skip the event. His absence is ascribed to the clashing dates of the summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Though they claim that reason, one can take a note of his meeting with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister in Beijing, regarding Teesta project. China is likely to be represented by its Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong.

The sessions will be chaired by India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar

A central theme will be the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Iran has advised India to build a consensus within BRICS for a joint statement regarding US-Israel actions. but, internal separations, especially between Iran and the UAE, have made a unified declaration difficult. Dialogues are expected to cover the disruption of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. India is particularly concerned about the transit of Indian vessels and the safety of its nationals in the region. Maldives breaks the tradition of ‘Take and Forget.’ President Muizzu clears the tab, leaving other neighbors wondering if ‘repayment’ is even a real word!

The ministers will focus on reforms to the multilateral system and the promotion of a multipolar world order, as the expansion includes, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Indonesia.

India has to walk a tight rope between Iran and Western interventions and the rift with Iran with other Gulf countries, especially with UAE. Terror in Lakki Marwat: Market Blast Claims Seven Lives Amid Rising Instability in Pakistan’s Borderlands

Though this stage cannot bring in massive result, it can be an avenue for the new dialogues, ideas and to some extent it can start fresh talks on Iran-US-Israel war, at least UAE and Iran will share the same platform.
