Colonial Bias Exposed: Norway's Aftenposten slammed for 'blatantly racist' cartoon targeting PM Modi

From Snake Charmers to Tech Leaders: Western media faces fierce backlash over outdated, racist tropes

Oslo: Norway’s leading daily newspaper, Aftenposten, published a political cartoon depicting PM Narendra Modi as a snake charmer. In the illustration, PM Modi is seen holding a fuel-station filling pipe shaped like a snake. RAREISM Regular FIT Plain Shirt

The cartoon gave an opinion of the article titled A clever and slightly annoying man. The piece and the accompanying artwork aimed to critique India’s geopolitical attitude, specifically its trade choices regarding oil imports, despite shifting global dynamics.

During a joint presentation with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, a Norwegian journalist, Helle Lyng, publicly questioned PM Modi on press freedom and why he does not hold open press conferences to take direct questions from the media.

While the leaders left the briefing without addressing the question, the incident went viral online. India's Ministry of External Affairs sharply pushed back. Diplomat Sibi George defended India's democratic framework, pointing to the immense scale and multilingual diversity of the Indian media landscape, while criticizing Western commentators for relying on selective narratives from ignorant NGOs. The cartoon ignited severe backlash across social media, with critics, international observers, and the Indian diaspora condemning it as "blatantly racist" and xenophobic. The core of the anger cantered on several elements. Contrary to the European narrative, India as primitive and uncivilised country. PM Modi has previously spoken on global platforms about how India has evolved in the global consciousness from a land of snake charmers to a technology-driven nation of mouse charmers.
