The tragedy occurred right after both climbers had successfully achieved their dream of reaching the highest peak on Earth. Sandeep Are, successfully reached the summit on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. His achievement came on a historic, record-breaking day where a massive window of good weather allowed 274 climbers to summit in a single day, the highest ever recorded in a 24-hour period. Unfortunately, Sandeep succumbed to exhaustion during his descent on Thursday.

Arun Tiwari, reached the summit the following day, Thursday, May 21, 2026, around 5:30 PM. He also faced severe physical depletion on his way down, and his exact time of passing remains unconfirmed.

Rishi Bhandari, the Secretary General of the Expedition Operators Association of Nepal, stated that the Sherpa guides noticed the intense exhaustion overtaking both climbers during their descent. The guides worked really hard, but were not able to save them.

Despite desperate high-altitude rescue efforts, oxygen administration, and physical assistance in the Death Zone, the lethal altitude above 8,000 meters where oxygen is scarce, both men could not recover. The expert climbers say, climbing up the Everest is easy, but dissenting down is very challenging. By the time a climber reaches the summit, they would have often pushed their body to absolute structural limits for 10 to 15 hours straight. Where, extreme dehydration, lack of oxygen, and fatigue can cause the body to shut down rapidly, occasionally leading to fatal brain or lung swelling.
