June, 4th, New Delhi, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has arrived in New Delhi on a two-day official visit to India. This is her first official visit to the country since taking office, following a diplomatic stop in China. Her journey begins today with a high-level courtesy call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, After an extensive bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. The basic focus of Cooper's visit is to accelerate the full implementation of the landmark UK-India Free Trade Agreement (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement), which was formally signed off by PM Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in July 2025. Her trip directly builds on a visit earlier this week by UK Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle to push the deal into force as quickly as possible.
The agreement is projected to boost bilateral trade by £25.5 billion annually. Recent discussions have aimed to iron out final implementation hurdles, specifically surrounding upcoming steel import restrictions and the UK's carbon border mechanisms.
With the escalating geopolitical conflicts in West Asia and Europe, discussions will intensely focus on protecting global trade routes. Cooper will emphasize shared UK-India interests regarding freedom of navigation and maritime security. The two nations will address joint efforts to safeguard energy security and minimize economic shocks caused by supply chain disruptions, particularly in critical corridors like the Strait of Hormuz. Beyond government meetings, the Foreign Secretary will welcome new Indian investments into the Technology Security Initiative, interact with Indian AI health-tech entrepreneurs, and attend a special British Council event highlighting collaborative educational and growth initiatives.
